The American Museum of Natural History is running a special event that celebrates the rich historic and cultural heritage of Turkmenistan, featuring craft and music from this Central Asian nation that was one of the gateways on the legendary Silk Road trading route from Europe to Asia.
See displays of traditional antique embroidered robes and animal trappings from the Main National Museum of Turkmenistan in Ashgabat, contemporary Turkmen jewelry, a silk weaving loom, and the felt-making process. Throughout the day, the program will be accompanied by a female Turkmen singer or bagshi from Altyn Menzil group and traditional music of the dutar, a long-necked lute.
