Event date: 4 November 2014, 6pm
Dr Eiluned Edwards, Reader in Global Cultures of Textiles and Dress at Nottingham Trent University will be giving a talk at the South Asian Decorative Arts & Crafts Collection Trust in central Norwich, on textiles, dress and identity in Gujarat.
Textiles and dress play a central role in the construction of identity in India. Those of Gujarat have long been acclaimed for their design and craftsmanship. After a brief outline of textiles and dress in India, the ‘social life’ of Gujarat’s textiles will be illustrated, showing the ways in which individual and community identities are created through cloth and dress. Relationships between consumers and producers of textiles will be explored, including embroiderers, weavers, dyers and block-printers.
